Born in a poor family in the city of Nottingham, Barnes grew up playing for local teams and later transferred to Coventry City, where he became a regular starter at left-back. He was also involved in youth development schemes and was eventually offered a contract by Leicester City in 1965.
After signing for Leicester City, Barnes quickly established himself as a key player, helping the club to achieve great success during his time there. He made over 200 appearances for the team, scoring nine goals, and was a key member of their squad that won the League Cup in 1970-71.
Barnes' time at Leicester was short-lived, however, as he struggled to find consistency at the club. After a disappointing season in 1972-73, he moved to Manchester United, hoping to secure a new challenge. There, he struggled to make an impact and only managed three appearances in the Premier League before being sold to West Ham United in 1974.
Despite his lack of success at Manchester United, Barnes remained a beloved figure within the football community. He was awarded a lifetime contract from the club, which allowed him to continue playing despite his age and injury concerns.
In retirement, Barnes continued to work towards his dream of becoming a coach or manager, but unfortunately, he never achieved this goal. His final game came in 1988-89, when he was appointed as manager of Leicester City.
Harvey Barnes' legacy is still felt today, as he remains a legendary figure in the annals of English football history. His achievements, both on and off the pitch, will always be remembered fondly by fans and players alike.
